About Ramsey
Ramsey Alnaif built a legal path that led him from an economics degree in Canada to a courtroom role in Virginia. He earned a B.A. in Economics from Carleton University in 2012 and completed his J.D. at UDC David A. Clarke School of Law in 2016. Those school years shaped his legal perspective and prepared him for work at the public defender’s table.
After law school he entered public defense. In 2017 he joined the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission as an Assistant Public Defender I. That position placed him in front of judges and juries, handling cases for people who cannot afford private counsel. His caseload has included a range of criminal matters, and the work has required regular courtroom appearances, client interviews, and case preparation under tight timeframes.
Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in court. He approaches each file by sorting facts, statute, and procedure. He spends time on motions, plea negotiations, and trial strategy. The role involves fast-paced legal decision-making and ongoing contact with clients, victims, and court staff. Through that daily practice, he has become familiar with the mechanics of Virginia criminal procedure and local courtroom practice.
Outside the office he has maintained ties to the legal community. He has been a member of the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association since 2018. That membership connects him with local lawyers and provides access to continuing legal education and professional programs. He participates in work that keeps him current on developments in criminal law and procedure in the region.
His education and early career choices point to a steady apprenticeship in public defense. He moved from academic training into a public-service role and has consolidated practical skills in the years since. The work requires both legal knowledge and an ability to manage heavy caseloads. It also demands clear communication with clients facing difficult circumstances.
Today he remains in Virginia practicing as a public defender. He continues to handle criminal cases for indigent clients and appears regularly in state courts representing people charged with offenses. He currently focuses on public defense work in Virginia.
