About R. Scott

R. Scott Carlyon earned his Juris Doctor from Saint Mary s University School of Law in 1992. He arrived at law school already intent on courtroom work and left with a string of competitive honors. In his first year he won the Freshman Moot Court competition and took Best Speaker in the same event. He also won the Best Brief Award in the Walker Moot Court competition and participated in numerous mock trials and moot court contests during his studies. Those early successes shaped his approach to advocacy and to legal writing.

After graduation, Carlyon built a career rooted in the skills he sharpened in law school. Over the years he has remained engaged in litigation-related work, where oral argument and written briefs carry particular weight. His law school record — heavy on both oral advocacy and brief drafting — translated into practical courtroom experience. Colleagues and courtroom peers have seen him apply those foundational techniques to case preparation and trial presentation.

Carlyon’s professional interests reflect his training. He emphasizes clear, structured briefs and careful preparation for oral argument. He has focused on developing persuasive narratives for judges and juries, and he pays attention to the architecture of a case as much as to isolated points of law. That orientation toward advocacy is apparent in how he approaches evidence, witness preparation, and appellate posture.

Clients and fellow lawyers have described Carlyon as deliberate in his courtroom manner. He tends to favor a steady, methodical pace in hearings and trials, rather than dramatic flourishes. That style is consistent with someone who honed his craft in competitive moot court settings where clarity and precision are rewarded.

Outside the courtroom, he has remained connected to the kinds of exercises that launched his career: moot court and mock trials. Those activities inform how he mentors younger lawyers and how he evaluates procedural strategy. He combines an eye for detail with an emphasis on organizing argument into a logical sequence.

As of 2026, Carlyon’s practice centers on trial and appellate advocacy.
