About Peter C Herbst
Peter C Herbst Jr began his path to law after earning a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Michigan in 1996. He took the next step at Vermont Law School, receiving his J.D. in 2002, then added a Master of Laws in Tax from Boston University School of Law in 2009. Those three degrees frame a practice that crosses technical tax questions and traditional estate work.
He entered private practice in the mid-2000s and became a partner at Herbst & Herbst, LLC in 2005. A move followed in 2008 when he worked as an associate at Baker, Braverman & Barbadoro P.C. He completed his LL.M. the next year, then continued to expand his practice and professional network.
In 2014 he joined Gorfinkle & Herbst, LLC, and five years later he helped establish Herbst Law Group, LLC, where he is listed as counsel. Along the way he gained admission to practice in Connecticut and Massachusetts and secured standing before the United States Tax Court. Those credentials allow him to represent clients in state matters and in federal tax controversies.
His practice touches on tax planning and tax litigation, estate planning, elder law, and matters involving trusts and real property. He is active in professional circles that reflect those interests: the Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section of the American Bar Association; the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys; and the Boston Estate Planning Council. He has been a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association since 2008 and serves on the executive board of ProVisors, where he has been engaged since 2014. He also participates in the South Shore Young Professionals group.
Clients and colleagues describe his approach as methodical. He draws on tax training from his LL.M. program when handling complex estate and trust questions. The environmental science background from his undergraduate studies contributes a different angle to problem solving, particularly on issues that intersect with regulatory or land-use concerns.
Over the course of two decades he has moved between firm roles and partnership, then back to private practice leadership. That trajectory has given him experience on both sides of client counseling and firm management. He continues to practice at Herbst Law Group, LLC, where he handles tax, estate planning, elder law, and trust and real property matters.
