About Paul R.
Paul R. Sugarman built a law career that begins on campus and extends into the federal courts. He earned an A.A. from Boston University in 1951 and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 1954. Those credentials set the stage for a long professional life in Massachusetts law.
Early on he established himself in the state legal community. Over decades he developed the kind of practice that led to admission across multiple forums. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, before the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the U.S. Supreme Court and the United States Court of Military Appeals.
Rather than chase headlines, Sugarman focused on steady courtroom work and client representation. He has maintained an active presence in bar and legal organizations. Memberships include the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Massachusetts Association of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, the Massachusetts Bar Foundation, the American Association for Justice, the American Judicature Society and the American Society of Law and Medicine.
His title at the firm reflects a later-career role. He serves as of counsel at Sugarman & Sugarman, P.C. The of-counsel position usually combines advisory responsibilities with case involvement when needed. In that capacity he has continued to advise attorneys inside the firm and to consult on litigation matters that arise.
Colleagues describe him as steady and experienced in court procedure and filings. He has navigated matters that required appearances in federal district court and, on occasion, filings that touched the scope of the U.S. Supreme Court. He has also handled issues that brought military appellate procedure into play before the United States Court of Military Appeals.
Outside the courtroom he has remained plugged into professional organizations that shape the practice of law in Massachusetts and nationally. Those memberships have kept him involved in continuing legal education and professional networks even as the practice evolved around him.
Now in a senior advisory role at Sugarman & Sugarman, P.C., he draws on decades of practice and institutional knowledge. His current practice concentrates on advising clients and handling litigation matters.
