About Paul James

Paul James Barrus built his legal foundation in the Midwest and the Mountain West. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University–Idaho in 2011 and completed his Juris Doctor at Northwestern University School of Law in 2015. Those formative years gave him the academic grounding that he carried into practice.

After law school, Barrus entered practice and has worked continuously since earning his J.D. He is licensed to practice in both Utah and California, which shapes how he approaches client matters. Being admitted in two states allows him to handle legal issues that cross state lines and to represent clients in forums where local rules and practices differ.

Barrus joined Parr Brown Gee & Loveless and practices out of that firm. At the firm he has taken on a range of assignments that require attention to detail and an ability to explain complex points in plain language. Colleagues describe him as deliberate in his preparation and clear in his courtroom or client communications. He approaches fact patterns carefully, and he aims to set out options for clients so they can make informed decisions.

In his day-to-day work Barrus represents individuals and organizations in matters arising in the jurisdictions where he is licensed. He handles filings, motions, and client counseling while coordinating across teams when cases involve multiple practice areas. He has experience managing procedural deadlines and assembling the factual record that underpins legal positions. He also works with outside counsel when matters reach beyond a single state’s borders.

Beyond casework, Barrus draws on the analytical training he received at Northwestern. He applies classroom lessons to real-world problems, translating legal principles into practical advice. His educational background informs how he frames legal issues for both clients and decision makers.

Colleagues and clients often note his steady temperament in challenging situations. He prefers clear planning and careful execution over dramatic gestures. That steady approach plays out whether preparing interlocutory briefs or meeting with clients to explain options and next steps.

He currently practices at Parr Brown Gee & Loveless, handling matters for clients in Utah and California.
