About Patrick
Patrick Mahaney built a legal foundation that began at The Citadel, where he earned a B.A. in political science in 1970. He later returned to school and received his J.D. from the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law at Faulkner University in 1985. Those years of study set the stage for a career split between public service and private practice.
Early in his career he joined the Alabama Department of Public Safety as an Assistant Lawyer General in 1990. That post put him inside the machinery of state law enforcement and exposed him to regulatory and criminal matters from the government side. More than a decade later he served as a municipal court prosecutor for the City of Montgomery in 2003, taking on courtroom responsibilities at the local level and developing trial experience in front-line matters.
In 2006 he opened his own practice, forming the Law Office of Patrick Mahaney, LLC. As owner and principal, he has handled a range of criminal matters. He is admitted to practice in Alabama and holds admissions that allow him to appear in federal forums, including the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Those credentials have shaped the types of cases he pursues and the venues where he appears.
Outside the courtroom he has remained active in professional organizations that center on criminal defense and impaired driving law. He has been a member of the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association since 2005 and joined the Montgomery County Bar Association in 2007. In 2014 he accepted a charter membership in the DUI Defense Lawyers Association. From 2015 through 2023 he served as a state delegate to the National College for DUI Defense, participating in programs and discussions that address changes in DUI practice and evidence law.
Colleagues and clients know him for straightforward courtroom work and long experience across municipal and federal matters. He balances years in government roles with private-practice litigation. He currently practices at the Law Office of Patrick Mahaney, LLC, handling criminal defense and DUI cases.
