About Nicholas
Nicholas Simopoulos built a legal career that moves easily between appellate chambers, government offices and private practice. He began his academic journey at the University of Virginia, where he earned a double major in biology and history in 1999. He then attended George Mason University School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 2004.
His early years after law school were shaped by appellate work. He served as an appellate judicial law clerk at the Maryland Court of Special Appeals in 2004 and then took a clerkship at the Virginia Court of Appeals in 2005. Those clerkships introduced him to the craft of legal writing and the mechanics of appellate decision-making.
He moved into public service in Richmond soon after. In 2007 he joined the City of Richmond as an assistant city lawyer. That role expanded into work for the Virginia Attorney General’s office, where he served as an assistant lawyer general beginning in 2011. He later became manager of the General Civil Litigation & Trial Unit and a senior assistant lawyer general in 2015. The work covered a mix of civil litigation and trial supervision, and it offered regular courtroom experience at both state and federal levels.
In 2013 he also stepped into the classroom as an adjunct law professor at the College of William & Mary Law School. Teaching law students added another dimension to his practice, reinforcing an emphasis on appellate reasoning and courtroom procedure.
In 2018 he opened his own firm, Simopoulos Law, PLLC, where he serves as owner and managing partner. His practice includes matters heard in the District of Columbia and Virginia courts. He maintains admissions to the U.S. Supreme Court and several federal circuits and district courts, including the D.C. Circuit and the 4th Circuit, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Beyond case work, he holds a Civil eDiscovery Certification from Georgetown University Law Center. He has been active in local and professional organizations. His memberships include the Bar Association of the City of Richmond, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and the D.C. Bar (membership recorded from 2017). He also served on the board of the Museum District Association and acted as its liaison to the City of Richmond from 2019 to 2020.
He practices from Simopoulos Law, PLLC. His current practice covers civil litigation, appellate matters and e-discovery issues in federal and state courts.
