About Neil

Neil Smith graduated from the University of Missouri–Columbia in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in political science, history and philosophy. He earned his J.D. from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 2003. Those years framed his interest in public law and the practical side of legal work, and they led directly to his first position in a federal office.

After law school, Smith spent time in the Office of Chief Counsel at the Internal Revenue Service as an intern in 2003. That role exposed him to the procedure and paperwork that anchor federal practice. He moved into private practice a few years later. In 2005 he joined Kramer & Frank, P.C. as an associate, where he worked on a range of matters while gaining courtroom and client-side experience.

A year after joining Kramer & Frank, Smith opened his own practice. In 2006 he became the managing lawyer of The Smith Law Office, LLC. He has led the small firm since then. The move to his own office allowed him to shape how client matters were handled and to run day-to-day operations. Over time he has balanced the administrative demands of running a firm with the steady work of representing clients in state matters.

Smith is a member of The Missouri Bar and is licensed to practice in Missouri. He maintains his practice in the state and handles filings, appearances and client counseling there. Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in the way he approaches cases. He tends to favor clear pleadings and careful preparation over theatrical courtroom tactics.

Clients and peers have noted that Smith’s path—from federal intern to associate and then to managing lawyer—gives him a broad view of the legal system. He knows how large organizations operate and how a small office must adapt. That perspective shows up in his handling of routine and complex procedural matters. He also draws on his undergraduate studies in political science, history and philosophy when framing issues for judges and opposing counsel.

He continues to operate The Smith Law Office, LLC out of his Missouri office. He is currently focused on representing clients in matters arising under Missouri law from his office at The Smith Law Office, LLC.
