About Mr. Scott J.

Mr. Scott J. Sumner graduated from Michigan State University College of Law in 1986 after completing a Bachelor of Science in Real Estate and Construction Management at Michigan State in 1983. He followed an education that combined property and business subjects with legal training. The sequence of degrees shaped the practical blend of estate, probate and financial matters that would mark his practice.

He has practiced law in Michigan for many years. His bar membership in the State of Michigan allows him to handle matters across the state. Over time he added certificates intended to broaden the services he can offer: a Family Law Certificate of Completion from the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, a Personal Financial Planning credential from the Oakland University School of Business, and a Probate & Estate Planning Certificate of Completion from ICLE. Those programs reflect continuing study in family, financial and estate subjects.

Sumner has been active in local and county bar organizations. He is a current member of the Rochester Bar Association and previously served as its president. He also maintains memberships in the State Bar of Michigan, the Oakland County Bar Association, and the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Those roles placed him in regular contact with other practitioners and with issues affecting court practice and local legal administration.

His work has covered a mix of probate, estate planning and family law matters. The background in real estate and construction management gives him particular familiarity with property-related aspects of estates and with financial planning that touches on real property. The family law certificate reflects training relevant to divorce and custody matters that often intersect with financial and estate issues.

He operates out of multiple offices in the Detroit metropolitan area. His practice locations include Village of Clarkston, Rochester Hills, Clinton Township (Cherry Creek Plaza) and Americenter. The spread of offices allows him to meet clients across suburban jurisdictions and to attend matters at nearby courts.

Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who relies on procedural knowledge and credentials in related financial fields when advising clients. He has balanced continuing legal education with practical, locally based practice. He continues to update his skills through ICLE programs and maintains active participation in local bar groups.

He currently focuses his practice on family law, probate and estate planning, and personal financial planning.
