About Mr. Peter Stephens
Mr. Peter Stephens French built a legal foundation at two long-established schools. He earned a B.A. in Government and Economics from the College of William and Mary in 1985. He then completed his J.D. at Tulane University School of Law in 1989, earning an Environmental Certificate alongside his law degree.
Those academic choices shaped the early contours of his career. The combination of government and economics at William and Mary informed a practical view of policy and markets. The environmental training at Tulane provided classroom grounding in the statutes and regulatory frameworks that often intersect with business decisions.
French’s professional path includes partnerships at two firms. In 1999 he became a partner at Lewis & Kappes, a role that placed him in a firm environment during a period of growth for corporate and regulatory work. In 2011 he joined Benesch Friedlander Coplan & Aronoff as a partner, a move that put him in a larger platform of practice and resources.
Over the years he has handled matters that draw on his environmental training and his background in government and economics. He has advised clients on regulatory considerations and on legal questions where environmental rules intersect with commercial transactions. His approach to those issues tends to emphasize practical assessment of risk and navigating administrative processes.
Colleagues describe him as steady in the room and methodical on paper. He prefers clear steps over grand theory. That preference shows in how he structures legal work: identifying the controlling statutes and administrative rules, assessing client exposure, and mapping routes to resolution. He has spent more than three decades applying those methods in private practice since finishing law school in 1989.
Today he works out of Benesch Friedlander Coplan & Aronoff. He brings his educational background in government, economics and environmental law to bear on matters that require both regulatory understanding and attention to commercial effects. He currently practices at Benesch Friedlander Coplan & Aronoff, concentrating on environmental and regulatory matters.
