About Mr. Eric Andrew

Mr. Eric Andrew Hultman combines technical training and legal education in a career built around intellectual property. He earned a J.D. from Michigan State University, where he concentrated on intellectual property law. Before law school he completed both an MBA and a B.S. in mechanical engineering at Grand Valley State University. That mix of engineering, business and law is a through line in his work.

After completing his legal education, Hultman moved into practice that centers on patents. He is registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a patent lawyer and is admitted to practice in Michigan. His background in mechanical engineering gives him a practical grasp of technical disclosure, and his business training helps him assess the commercial side of inventions.

Early in his career he worked on matters that required translating complex mechanical concepts into legal documents. He prepares and files patent applications, navigates the examination process at the USPTO, and counsels clients about how to protect their inventions. He handles the drafting of claims and responses to office actions, and he assists clients in building and maintaining patent portfolios.

Hultman’s practice involves working with inventors and small to mid-sized companies. He often meets with engineers and founders to evaluate whether an idea is patentable and what form protection should take. He also drafts agreements that affect intellectual property rights and helps clients understand the interplay between patents and product development timelines. His technical training lets him engage directly with design details rather than relying solely on outside experts.

He maintains a private practice under Hultman Law, PLC. He operates as a patent lawyer in Michigan and at the USPTO, providing counseling and prosecution services. Clients looking for someone who can read engineering drawings and translate them into patent claims will find that combination central to his work. He currently focuses his practice on patent prosecution, patent counseling and related IP matters.
