About Morris

Morris Anyah built a career that moves between courtrooms in the United States and international tribunals in The Hague. He arrived at law after study at the University of Illinois–Chicago, where he completed a B.A. in criminal justice in 1986 and an M.A. in criminal justice in 1991. He earned his J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1996.

His early work began in Chicago. In 1996 he joined the Cook County State's Lawyer's Office as an assistant state’s lawyer. That role placed him in a busy local practice handling prosecutions and courtroom work. A few years later he left to take a post at the United Nations tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague. As a legal officer in the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICTY in 1999, he worked on matters that required both legal analysis and coordination with multinational teams.

In the 2000s Anyah shifted toward private practice and international criminal defense. He formed Anyah and Associates, LLC in Atlanta in 2002. International work followed. He served as co-counsel to former Liberian President Charles Taylor at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague in 2007. He returned to The Hague in 2011 as common legal representative for 233 Kenyan victims before the International Criminal Court. In 2012 he took on lead appeals counsel responsibilities for Charles Taylor, again at the Special Court proceedings.

In 2014 he established the Law Office of Morris A. Anyah, LLC., continuing to handle appellate matters, international criminal cases, and cross-border disputes. His admissions include Illinois and Georgia state bars as well as federal appellate jurisdictions such as the Seventh and Eleventh Circuits, and the District of Columbia. Those registrations reflect a practice that passes between state courts, federal appeals, and international forums.

Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who has moved steadily into complex litigation and appellate work. His docket has included both representation of individuals and roles representing groups of victims at international tribunals. That mix gives him perspective on criminal procedure, victim representation, and appellate strategy.

He maintains membership in the Illinois State Bar and runs his office from Atlanta. He handles appeals, international criminal matters, and cross-border litigation in his current practice focus.
