About Miriam Kouzel

Miriam Kouzel Billington built an early foundation in performance before turning to the law. She earned a B.S. in Theatre from Northwestern University in 1988. Years later she returned to school for law, completing a J.D. at Purdue Global Law School in 2010.

Billington's shift from theatre to law shaped how she approaches clients and courtrooms. The study and practice of theatre trained her in presentation, timing and listening. Those skills migrated to legal settings where clear communication matters. After finishing law school she entered practice in California and has maintained her license in that jurisdiction.

Her legal career has been steady rather than flashy. She has handled matters that required careful preparation, drafting and the ability to explain complex points to judges and opposing counsel. Colleagues describe her as methodical. Clients who have worked with her say she prepares thoroughly and prioritizes clarity. She balances a deliberate courtroom manner with an ability to translate legal concepts for non-lawyers.

Billington's background offers an unusual combination of performance instincts and legal training. She uses those instincts in depositions, hearings and client meetings. Preparing witnesses and structuring testimony are areas where that experience becomes practical. She also places importance on written work—briefs, motions and correspondence—seeing them as opportunities to make concise legal arguments.

Outside of direct advocacy, she has been involved in the administrative side of practice. That has included managing case files, supervising support staff and coordinating with experts when necessary. Those tasks are less visible but essential to keeping cases moving and preserving strategic options.

Today Billington practices law in California. Her career path — from a theatre degree in the 1980s to a law degree in 2010 — reflects a professional trajectory that values communication, preparation and measured advocacy. She continues to represent clients in matters brought in California courts and administrative forums, concentrating her current practice on serving individuals and organizations within the state.
