About Michael
Michael Politis trained first as a business student before moving into law. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, concentrating in corporate finance, from the University of Florida in 1983. He then attended Nova Southeastern University College of Law, completing his J.D. in 1988. Those years set the stage for a career that has spanned prosecution and private practice in Florida.
He began his legal career in the State Lawyer’s Office, rising through courtroom roles in successive years. In 1990 he served as a misdemeanor prosecutor. The next year he handled felony prosecutions. By 1992 he was the office’s chief homicide prosecutor. Those posts exposed him to high-stakes trials and heavy caseloads. In 1993 he left public service and helped establish Politis & Matovina, P.A., where he became a senior partner and owner.
Over three decades in practice, he has kept one foot in civil litigation and the other in criminal defense. He has been admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida since 1993. He also maintains memberships in multiple local and statewide bar organizations, including the Volusia County Bar Association and the Orange County Bar Association. Professional groups on his resume include the Volusia Civil Trial Lawyers Association and the Volusia chapter of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He joined the Million Dollar & Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum in 2011 and is a member of the Association of Plaintiff Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America since 2012.
Those affiliations reflect the mixed docket he handles at the firm. His background as a prosecutor informs his criminal defense work. His civil practice includes trial litigation and cases arising from motor vehicle and trucking incidents. Colleagues and opposing counsel encounter an attorney comfortable in the courtroom and familiar with both sides of criminal and civil dispute resolution.
Politis & Matovina, P.A. has operated multiple offices in Florida since the firm’s founding. He continues to serve as a senior partner and to try cases on behalf of clients across the state. He remains active in county and federal practice and in a range of bar associations. His current practice involves criminal defense, civil trial litigation, and plaintiff-side interstate trucking matters.
