About Michael
Michael Cohen built a bridge between science and law early in his career. He earned a B.A. in Biological and Chemical Sciences from Arizona State University in 1996 and completed his J.D. at Southwestern University School of Law in 2002. His undergraduate training informs the technical side of his legal work and helps him translate complex scientific ideas into patent claims and litigation strategies.
He began practicing law immediately after law school. In 2002 he worked at Tharpe and Howell. He moved to Trojan Law Office in 2003 and joined Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith in 2004. In 2005 he established his own firm, Cohen IP Law Group, P.C., and has served as owner and principal lawyer since then. Those early years in different firm environments exposed him to a range of client matters and courtroom procedures.
Cohen founded Cohen IP Law Group, P.C. in 2005. The firm operates a main office and maintains satellite locations. Over time the practice has handled patent prosecution, patent litigation, trademark work and counseling for businesses and individual inventors. Cohen has overseen cases and filings across a number of technological areas, handling matters that require both legal and scientific fluency.
He holds admission to practice in California and before many federal courts. His federal admissions include the United States District Court for the Central, Southern and Northern Districts of California, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Texas. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal District. Cohen is registered with the Federal Patent Bar of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, allowing him to handle patent prosecution matters directly.
Cohen holds memberships in several professional organizations that align with his practice areas. He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Division, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Beverly Hills Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Section and the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association. He also belongs to the American Chemical Society and is involved with the Jewish Federation’s EMET Legal Division. The Beverly Hills Bar Association has recognized him through the Order of Distinguished Lawyers.
His work combines patent prosecution and defense, trademark counseling and client advisement on IP portfolio development. He draws on his scientific background when handling life sciences and chemical patents, translating technical detail into legal argument. He currently concentrates his practice on patent prosecution, patent litigation and trademark matters for clients across the United States.
