About Michael
Michael Cogan built his legal foundation at the University of Illinois–Chicago, where he earned a B.A. in 1978. He stayed in Chicago for law school and received his J.D. from The John Marshall Law School in 1981. Those years in the classroom and on campus set the stage for a long career in Illinois courts.
He moved into practice soon after law school and has remained active in the state ever since. In 2012 he became a partner at Cogan & Power. That role followed years of courtroom work and steady involvement in trial lawyer organizations. He has kept one foot in practice and the other in the professional associations that shape civil litigation in Illinois.
Cogan’s organizational work is extensive. He holds memberships in the American Association for Justice, the Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association. He joined the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association Board of Governors in 2013 and began serving on the ITLA Medical Negligence Committee as co-chair in 2014. He has been a supporting member of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice since 2005. Outside the bar, he has served on the board of Cornerstones Health, Inc. since 2011. Earlier in his career he provided legal counsel to The Knapp Burn Foundation from 1992 to 1995.
The pattern in those commitments is consistent: long-term participation and steady leadership in groups concerned with trial work and medical negligence. His colleagues point to that continuity as a practical asset. He brings the perspectives gathered in committee rooms back into the courtroom, and the courtroom lessons into committee deliberations.
On the courtroom side, Cogan has concentrated on litigation that often involves medical negligence and personal injury claims. He has tried cases and prepared complex motions. He has also mentored younger lawyers through professional organizations and by example in firm practice. That mixture of trial experience and organizational involvement informs how he approaches cases and prepares clients for what lies ahead.
Cogan balances practice and civic involvement in ways that keep him visible in the local legal community. He remains based in Illinois and continues as a partner at Cogan & Power, where he handles medical negligence and personal injury litigation.
