About Michael
Michael Cathey built his academic foundation at the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado–Boulder. He moved between two different college towns and ended up with degrees that prepared him for a career in law. Those years shaped how he thinks about problem solving and prepared him for the work he would do in Tennessee.
After completing his studies, Cathey established his practice in Tennessee. He is licensed to practice in the state and has worked on matters that require familiarity with Tennessee courts and regulations. His path through the early years of practice covered a range of assignments. He handled routine filings, courtroom appearances and negotiated resolutions. He learned how much careful preparation matters in contested and noncontested matters alike.
Cathey maintains current membership in professional associations. He keeps up with continuing legal education and stays engaged with peers. That ongoing engagement gives him access to developments in case law and procedure. It also provides a forum to test ideas and discuss strategies with other practitioners.
In practice he responds to the practical needs of clients. He approaches matters with an emphasis on clear communication. Clients receive straightforward explanations of options, risks and likely timelines. He prepares for hearings and negotiations in a structured way, placing attention on both legal detail and the practical consequences of each decision. When a case reaches a hearing he focuses on the facts that matter and presents them in a way that judges and opposing counsel can follow.
He maintains his practice in Tennessee and represents clients before state tribunals and administrative bodies. He handles matters that require local knowledge and the ability to operate in Tennessee’s legal landscape. He currently focuses his practice on representing clients in Tennessee state and administrative matters.
