About Melinda
Melinda McElheny began her professional path in Midwestern classrooms and carried that practical outlook into the law. She earned a B.S. in Organizational Management and Leadership from Friends University before turning to legal studies at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. She completed her J.D. in 2019 after a three- to four-year course of study that emphasized classroom work and clinical experience.
After law school, McElheny moved quickly into private practice. She established Murphy s Law LLC in 2019 and has served as the firm's owner and practicing lawyer since then. The firm operates out of Kansas and serves clients in matters that require representation in both state and federal settings. Her registration across multiple jurisdictions allows her to appear in courts closer to clients' needs.
McElheny holds licenses in Kansas and Iowa and is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of Kansas. Those admissions shape how she approaches a case. She works across state lines when the situation calls for it and prepares filings for federal court where appropriate. The triad of admissions gives her a range of procedural and venue options to pursue for clients.
Professional involvement has been a steady part of her calendar. She is a member of the Kansas Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Iowa State Bar Association. In 2022 she joined both the Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the American Agriculture Lawyers Association. More recently, she became a member of the Kansas Municipal Judges Association in 2024. The memberships expose her to continuing education and peer discussion on evolving topics in municipal, criminal, and agricultural law.
Colleagues describe McElheny as pragmatic in the courtroom and thorough in preparation. She has built a practice that leans on procedural knowledge and practical problem solving rather than on a single stylistic approach to litigation. Her work at Murphy s Law LLC includes advising clients, drafting pleadings, and representing interests in hearings and trials when necessary.
Outside of casework she participates in bar association meetings and attends seminars tied to municipal and agricultural legal concerns. That participation informs her daily practice and keeps her current on rule changes and emerging issues that affect local courts. She continues to lead Murphy s Law LLC and represents clients in matters across Kansas and Iowa, including filings in the District of Kansas federal court.
She maintains an active private practice through Murphy s Law LLC and represents clients in state and federal matters across her admitted jurisdictions.
