About Megan

Megan Elder earned her legal degrees in the early 2010s, completing a Juris Doctor at Thomas Goode Jones School of Law, Faulkner University in 2011 and an LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Denver in 2013. Those credentials gave her formal grounding in tax law at a time when tax issues were becoming more complex for individuals and small businesses alike. The combination of a J.D. and an LL.M. signals a deliberate turn toward tax practice, and she built on that foundation in the years that followed.

Her career began in private practice. In 2012 she worked as an associate at Zwiebel Law Office, a role that introduced her to client counseling and litigation support. The next year she formed or joined Elder Law Office, LLC and served as a lawyer there. By 2016 she took an associate position at Kirk Drennan, P.C. These moves trace a lawyer moving between firm and solo practice environments, taking on both advisory and courtroom responsibilities.

Elder is admitted to practice in Alabama and before the U.S. Tax Court. Those admissions reflect the twin strands of her practice: state-level client work and federal tax litigation or dispute resolution. Her LL.M. in taxation provides a technical base for arguing cases or advising on complex returns, and admission to the Tax Court allows her to represent clients in federal tax controversies.

Pro bono and community work have been a steady part of her professional life. Since 2013 she has chaired the Pro Bono committee of the Birmingham Bar Association and has been active within committees of the Alabama State Bar that focus on pro bono matters. Earlier, in 2012 and 2013, she contributed to the Birmingham Bar Association’s community education committee. Those roles suggest an interest in access to legal services and in educating the public about legal rights.

Colleagues describe her approach as practical and detail-oriented. She handles matters that require a careful reading of statutes and regulations, as well as attention to clients’ personal and financial circumstances. Her time in different practice settings exposed her to fee-for-service client counseling, contested proceedings, and the logistical challenges of running a small law office.

She continues to practice in Alabama and represents clients in tax matters before federal tribunals. She currently concentrates her practice on tax and elder law matters.
