About Matthew
Matthew Underwood runs a small estate planning practice in the Madison area. He builds simple explanations out of complex rules. Clients come to him for wills, trusts and practical guidance rather than legal theory.
He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, earning a B.S. in Economics in 2008. He stayed in Madison for law school and received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2012. While still in law school he served as a judicial law clerk at the Dane County Circuit Court in 2011, an experience that exposed him to courtroom procedure and local practice early in his career.
After law school he began practicing through Underwood Legal, LLC in 2012. In 2016 he spent time at Wilson Law Group, LLC working as an estate planning lawyer. Two years later he returned to Underwood Legal and established himself there as owner and estate planning lawyer in 2018. That sequence left him running his own practice, handling files personally and directing the office’s daily operations.
He maintains memberships in several professional groups. Since 2016 he has been a member of WealthCounsel, ElderCounsel and the Madison Estate Council. He also holds memberships in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin and the Dane County Bar Association dating back to 2012. These affiliations reflect ongoing engagement with peers and access to practice resources rather than ceremonial honors.
Day-to-day work covers estate planning documents and the matters that flow from them. He drafts wills and trusts, prepares powers of attorney and advance directives, and assists families who are addressing transitions in care or management of assets. He also handles probate matters that arise after a loved one’s death and helps clients consider options for long-term care planning.
Underwood works out of two Madison-area offices, serving neighborhoods on the east side around Monona and on the west side near Middleton. He keeps the practice deliberately local, handling cases across Wisconsin and appearing where necessary in nearby courts. He focuses his practice on estate planning, probate and elder law in Wisconsin.
