About Matthew T.

Matthew T. Dixon earned his law degree from Mississippi College School of Law in 2000 after completing undergraduate studies in English at Mississippi State University, where he received his B.A. in 1996. He also served in the United States Army Reserve; his service as a specialist in the 412th EnCom preceded his formal legal training. Early practical training included two externships with the Hinds County Office of the Public Defender while he was in law school.

He began his post-law-school career as an associate at Henley, Lotterhos & Henley, PLLC in 2000. Over the next decade he moved between public and private roles. By 2009 he was working in municipal prosecution for the City of Middletown’s Prosecutor’s Office while also maintaining a private practice under the name Matthew T. Dixon, Lawyer at Law LLC. In 2014 he joined a partnership that became Shew & Dixon Law Office, and the following year he returned to public defense as an assistant public defender in Butler County.

Dixon’s resume reflects time on both sides of the criminal justice system. He has courtroom experience as an associate attorney, a municipal prosecutor, and later as a public defender. That combination gives him familiarity with trial procedures, plea negotiations, and the practical demands of courtroom advocacy. His earlier externships in Hinds County provided a foundation in defense work during law school; the municipal prosecutor post offered a contrast in responsibilities and perspective.

Licensed to practice in Ohio and Mississippi, Dixon is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. His career moves indicate an attorney comfortable moving between private practice and government roles. He has sustained a local practice while taking on government appointments, and he has handled matters at both the county and municipal levels.

Colleagues describe him as someone who understands both the pressures prosecutors face and the advocacy required for indigent defense, based on his varied roles. He brings that practical knowledge back to his work in private practice, where he has partnered in a small firm setting. The trajectory from extern, to associate, to prosecutor, and then to public defender and partner maps a wide range of courtroom experience.

Dixon currently practices at Shew & Dixon Law Office. He handles criminal matters and related trial work, drawing on experience gained in prosecution, defense, and private practice.
