About Matthew S.
Matthew S. Schrum practices law in North Carolina and has concentrated his career on elder law and estate planning. He began practicing in the field in the early 2010s and has steadily built a practice that serves older adults, families, and caregivers across the state.
Schrum worked as an elder law and estate planning attorney at Four Pillars Law Office in 2011. Six years later he opened his own firm, Evergreen Estate Planning & Elder Law, where he serves as lawyer and owner. He handles traditional estate planning tasks—drafting wills, trusts, powers of attorney and advance directives—and guides clients through the practical steps of implementing those documents.
He earned accreditation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in 2013, a credential that allows him to assist veterans and their surviving family members with VA benefits and claims. He also advises on Medicaid planning and long-term care strategies. His practice routinely addresses guardianship and conservatorship matters, special needs planning, and probate administration for estates of varying complexity.
Schrum maintains memberships in several professional and community organizations. He has been a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys since 2012 and joined ElderCounsel in 2018. Since 2021 he has taken part in the NCBA Elder & Special Needs Law Council. Locally, he serves on the board of the Yadkin Valley United Fund, a role he assumed in 2018, and he joined the Hugh Chatham Health Foundation board in 2021. He has been active in the Yadkin Valley Rotary Club since 2017. Those roles reflect an interest in community service alongside his legal work.
In practice he balances client-facing work with organizational involvement. Day to day he meets with clients, drafts legal documents, and coordinates with financial and health care professionals to put plans into effect. He represents clients at hearings when necessary and prepares the estate administration work that follows a death or incapacity.
Schrum continues to lead Evergreen Estate Planning & Elder Law in North Carolina, where he practices elder law and estate planning and assists veterans and families with benefits and long-term care planning.
