About Matthew

Matthew Nuzum is an Iowa-licensed lawyer whose path to private practice runs through corporate in-house roles and work on open source policy. He graduated from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in 2021 after beginning the program in 2018. His coursework concentrated on business and commercial law and litigation, a combination that shaped his post-law school choices.

Before attending law school, Nuzum spent years in industry legal roles. His early work included a position at Canonical Ltd in 2006, followed by work for John Deere in 2012. Those experiences exposed him to technology and corporate environments. In 2022 he served as Open Source Lawyer Program Manager at Google, a role that placed him at the intersection of software licensing, corporate policy, and collaborative development.

That mix of corporate and technology experience informs how he approaches client matters. He is admitted to practice in the State of Iowa and holds admissions in the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa. He maintains membership in the State Bar of Iowa and keeps an active practice in the state’s business community.

Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in the way he evaluates risk and drafts agreements. He often works on transactional matters that touch on licensing and governance. He also handles litigation-related tasks when disputes arise, drawing on his litigation studies at law school. He favors clear contracts and careful intake processes to reduce later friction.

Clients have access to someone who has seen corporate policy from both inside companies and in private practice. That perspective can matter on issues where technology and commerce collide. He has navigated licensing questions for collaborative software projects and helped businesses structure commercial relationships.

Outside the office he participates in the State Bar of Iowa. He has kept ties to communities that concentrate on business law and technology policy. He continues to build a practice that reflects his background in corporate settings and open source concerns.

Nuzum works from his Iowa office under the name Iowa Business Lawyer. He currently focuses on business and commercial matters for clients in the state, including contract drafting, licensing issues, and court admissions in federal districts in Iowa.
