About Matthew
Matthew McGahren grew up studying at the University of North Carolina, where he earned a B.A. in 1989 before returning to the same campus for law school and receiving his J.D. in 1992. He entered the legal field at a time of change, joining a regional firm right after graduation and moving into roles that combined courtroom work with practice management.
His first position after law school was as an associate at the Henson Law Office in 1992. Two years later he was asked to run the firm’s Atlanta branch office, a role that expanded his responsibilities beyond casework and into overseeing daily operations. He struck out on his own in 1996, opening the McGahren Law Office and taking on the responsibilities of a solo practitioner.
By 2006 McGahren had shifted again, becoming a partner at McGahren, Gaskill & York, LLC. That move marked a return to a collaborative firm environment where he could combine his experience managing an office with longtime practice skills. Over the years he has handled matters that required him to practice across multiple state lines, and he maintains licensure in Georgia, North Carolina and Florida.
Colleagues describe his career as steady rather than flashy. He has spent decades navigating both the demands of running a firm and the practical work of representing clients. His time running a branch office and founding his own practice gave him a view of law as both a business and a public service. He has alternated between solo practice and partnership, and those shifts reflect a comfort with different professional structures and client needs.
McGahren’s path is notable for its continuity. He completed law school in 1992, immediately began practicing, and has remained active in the field ever since. That longevity has meant adapting to changes in court procedures, technology and client expectations. It has also meant maintaining licenses in three states, which allows him to assist clients whose interests cross state lines.
Today he serves as a partner at McGahren, Gaskill & York, LLC and continues to appear in matters within the jurisdictions where he is authorized to practice. His current practice concentrates on representing clients in matters across Georgia, North Carolina and Florida.
