About Matthew M
Matthew M Piston built a career that crosses public prosecution and private practice. He took a conventional path into the law and has stayed close to courtroom work throughout. Colleagues describe him as steady under pressure and attentive to the practical demands of litigation.
Piston earned his law degree from Albany Law School. The school’s curriculum and clinical offerings put him in court early. That early exposure helped shape the next stage of his career: public service in Monroe County.
In 2007 he joined the Monroe County District Attorney’s office as a Senior Assistant District Lawyer. There he handled prosecutions, managed caseloads and gained repeated trial experience. The role required frequent courtroom appearances, pretrial litigation and coordination with investigators. Those years in the DA’s office sharpened his trial instincts and familiarity with the mechanics of criminal procedure.
He moved into private practice in 2012 when he joined Evans Fox LLP as an associate. The transition broadened the scope of his work. At the firm he handled litigation matters, continued courtroom appearances and took on case strategy and client counseling. His background in the prosecutor’s office informed how he prepares cases and assesses risk for clients.
In 2017 Piston was promoted to partner at Evans Fox LLP. As a partner he assumed greater responsibility for client relationships and mentoring younger lawyers. He continued to try cases and to handle contested matters in court. Staff and opposing counsel note his methodical approach to trial preparation and steady courtroom presence.
Outside daily caseloads he has remained active in the legal community. He maintains professional memberships that began during his early career and continue to the present. Piston’s work reflects a blend of public and private sector training. He brings procedural knowledge from his time as a prosecutor into the handling of complex litigation in private practice.
He currently practices at Evans Fox LLP and handles litigation and courtroom representation.
