About Matthew

Matthew Lautman built his path to law on a foundation in political science. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Those academic years shaped the way he approaches legal questions: methodically, and with attention to how law and public policy intersect.

After law school, Lautman began practicing in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and he is also admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. That combination of state and federal credentials has allowed him to work on matters that move between trial courts and appellate review.

Lautman’s record shows regular engagement with both trial and appellate processes. He has prepared filings for state-court dockets and for federal proceedings. In the appellate context he has handled briefs and oral argument preparation for matters before the Third Circuit. His work reflects an attention to procedural detail and to the written advocacy that appellate work demands.

He maintains professional ties in the Pittsburgh legal community. Lautman is a current member of the Allegheny County Bar Association. He has participated in local bar activities and continuing legal education programs, which keep him connected to developments in state and federal practice.

Colleagues find that his political science background informs his analytical approach to case strategy. He tends to separate factual questions from legal questions early in the process, then addresses each on its own terms. That method is visible in the way he prepares court filings and organizes appellate briefs.

Lautman divides his time between state and federal court work. He currently practices law in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, representing clients in state and federal courts and handling appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
