About Matthew L.

Matthew L. Norwood earned his Bachelor of Science in 1998 from Michigan State University, where he studied pre-law. He returned to the same campus to complete his Juris Doctor in 2001. Those years at Michigan State set the stage for a career spent largely in criminal defense and courtroom practice.

After law school, Norwood began practicing in Michigan. He is authorized to appear in state courts and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Over the years he has handled a range of criminal matters, from routine arraignments to contested trials. He is known in local circles for steady courtroom presence and careful preparation.

His professional memberships reflect a sustained orientation toward criminal defense. He has been a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2006. He also belonged to the Criminal Defense Lawyer of Michigan from 2006 until 2020. These associations provide him regular contact with other defense lawyers and resources on trial practice and appellate issues.

Community and civic service have featured in Norwood’s career. He served on the Board of Trustees for Mott Community College beginning in 2013. The following year he joined the Board of Directors of the 100 Club of Genesee County. Those roles brought him into nonprofit governance and community safety work, and they reflect an engagement beyond the courtroom.

Colleagues describe Norwood as pragmatic. He prefers direct legal analysis over elaborate theory. In trial he tends to present evidence and argument in clear, chronological fashion. On appeal he focuses on discrete legal errors that might have affected the outcome below. He is comfortable in both bench and jury trials and has experience briefing appellate courts.

Today Norwood continues to practice law in Michigan and to accept matters that can be filed in the Sixth Circuit when appropriate. He handles criminal defense matters across a spectrum of severity, and his current practice concentrates on representing individuals charged with state and federal offenses.
