About Matthew

Matthew Bycer built a foundation in both science and business before he ever entered a courtroom. He earned a B.A. in physics and business economics from Brown University in 1997. He returned to Arizona and completed a J.D. in intellectual property law and an M.B.A. in marketing and business administration at the University of Arizona in 2003.

After law school, Bycer took positions that tied technical work to legal practice. In 2005 he worked in the University of Arizona Office of Technology Transfer handling licensing matters for university-developed technologies. That same year he served as an extern to the Honorable Chief Judge Stephen M. McNamee in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, a role that offered courtroom exposure and an inside look at federal procedure.

Those assignments shaped his early practice. At the technology transfer office he negotiated agreements and assessed inventions for commercial potential. The judicial externship gave him practical perspective on litigation and court processes. Both experiences informed the way he approaches intellectual property matters: attentive to technical detail and grounded in procedural realities.

His academic background is an unusual mix for a lawyer. A physics degree gave him training in quantitative reasoning and problem solving. An M.B.A. provided tools in market analysis and client communication. The J.D. added legal method and doctrine, particularly in intellectual property. The combination is apparent in the kinds of matters he takes on and how he explains technical concepts to business clients.

Bycer is admitted to practice in Arizona and is a registered patent lawyer at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He has taken on leadership roles in the bar. He served as chairman of the Arizona State Bar Intellectual Property Section Executive Council from 2019 to 2020.

He now practices from Bycer Law, PLC. His practice draws on the mix of scientific training, business education, and courtroom experience that has characterized his career. He works on patent prosecution, counseling for businesses and inventors, and technology licensing matters. He maintains registrations and admissions in Arizona and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

His current practice concentrates on patent and intellectual property matters for clients who bring technical inventions and business questions together.
