About Matthew A
Matthew A Marner built a career from the ground up. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Washington State University in 1998, followed by a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University in 2001. He completed his legal education at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, receiving his J.D. in 2008.
He entered practice shortly after law school at the Yuma County Legal Defender’s Office in 2008. The early years were spent in public defense. In 2010 he joined the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office, working in the Vehicular Unit where he handled DUI and related cases. Those courtroom years honed his familiarity with trial procedures and client advocacy in high-stakes traffic and criminal matters.
In 2014 he launched his own practice, opening The Law Office of Matthew A. Marner, PLLC and serving as owner and managing lawyer. He continued to balance public and private roles. In 2017 he took on duties as a public defender for the Town of Guadalupe, Arizona. In 2020 he served as Special Prosecutor for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, taking a prosecutorial role that added perspective to his earlier defense work.
Marner’s resume reflects work on both sides of the aisle. He has handled misdemeanor and felony matters, vehicular offenses, and courtroom litigation in state and tribal forums. That mix of defense and prosecutorial experience informs how he approaches case strategy, evidence evaluation, and plea negotiations. He has worked in trial courts and has experience managing caseloads that range from routine hearings to contested trials.
He is admitted to practice in Arizona and California, and holds admission to the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. Supreme Court, the federal district court in Arizona and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Court. He has been a member of the Arizona bar since 2008 and of the State Bar of California since 2009. He also maintains membership in the Arizona Public Defender’s Association.
Colleagues describe him as practical and straightforward in court, and clients have found his approach to be thorough. He keeps work rooted in courtroom procedure and statutory detail rather than theory. He balances the administrative demands of running a small firm with active litigation.
He currently leads The Law Office of Matthew A. Marner, PLLC, where he concentrates on criminal defense and related court matters.
