About Matt
Matt Mueller built a career at the intersection of tax law and criminal litigation. He arrived in courtrooms early in his professional life and has moved between government and private practice since. The result is a practice shaped by trial experience and federal litigation work.
Mueller earned his J.D. in 2007 from The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law. Before law school he completed a Master of Forensic Science at The George Washington University in 2000 and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame in 1998. Those scientific credentials inform the technical side of his legal work.
He began his legal career in 2007 as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice Tax Division. That role placed him on the prosecutorial side of complex tax disputes and criminal tax matters. In 2012 he joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida as an Assistant United States Attorney, where he continued courtroom work on federal prosecutions and related litigation.
After nearly a decade in public service, Mueller moved to private practice. He became a shareholder at Wiand Guerra King P.A. in 2015. In 2021 he was a founding member of Fogarty Mueller Harris, PLLC. His practice has included representation in federal courts, and he has handled matters that required coordination between state and federal authorities.
Mueller is admitted to practice in Florida and has appeared in multiple federal forums, including the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida and the Southern District of Florida, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and the U.S. Tax Court. Those admissions reflect a practice that routinely engages with federal procedure, evidentiary issues, and appellate considerations when cases move beyond trial.
He maintains memberships in professional groups tied to his work. He is a member of The Florida Bar and belongs to the American Bar Association sections on Taxation and Criminal Justice, the Federal Bar Association, the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Those affiliations mirror the dual nature of his career in tax and criminal law.
Clients and colleagues describe Mueller as methodical and courtroom-ready. He draws on years of prosecutor-side experience when advising clients in investigations or litigating disputes. He currently practices at Fogarty Mueller Harris, PLLC, representing clients in federal and state tax disputes and criminal matters.
