About Matt

Matt McFarland moved from circuit boards to case law. He earned a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tennessee Technological University and added a minor in Mathematics. After several years grounded in technical study he turned to law and earned his J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2011. The combination of engineering and legal training shapes his work. It gives him a methodical approach to problems and a comfort with complex, technical material.

His legal service runs alongside a long-standing military commitment. McFarland has served in the Tennessee Army National Guard since 2011. He is currently a Judge Advocate General, a role that places him in the mix of military legal matters and service-member support. That role requires attention to procedure and an ability to explain legal concepts to nonlawyers. It also keeps him connected to a distinct body of law and to the needs of those who serve.

In civilian practice McFarland joined Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers as an attorney in 2015. He has worked in the firm's offices and taken on the kinds of tasks common in an injury practice: assessing claims, managing evidence, negotiating with insurers and pursuing litigation when necessary. At the firm he applies the same discipline he learned in engineering and the Guard to each file, parsing technical details and translating them into legal arguments.

Colleagues and clients see a practical lawyer who moves between two working worlds. Military matters and personal-injury cases do not often look the same on paper, yet each demands careful preparation, clear communication and adherence to deadlines. McFarland’s training helps him frame complex facts for judges, juries and opposing counsel. He also draws on that background when cases involve technical issues such as accident reconstruction, medical-device reports or engineering testimony.

Outside courtrooms and military duty, he maintains professional memberships tied to his roles. He continues to balance Guard responsibilities with a full caseload at Hughes & Coleman. The steady rhythm of service, litigation and case preparation defines his day-to-day practice.

He currently handles personal injury matters at Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers while serving as a Judge Advocate General for the Tennessee Army National Guard.
