About Mark
Mark Taylor built a path to the law that began well before he entered a courtroom. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1983. After several years that included service in the U.S. Navy as a petty officer, he returned to school and received his Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1990.
His legal career began immediately after law school. In 1990 he joined Shefte, Pinckney & Sawyer as an associate lawyer. Early on he handled matters that drew on both his technical training and his legal education. By 1997 he was an associate at McGuireWoods, where he continued work that combined intellectual property concerns and broader commercial litigation issues. In 2000 he took on an of-counsel role at Stoll Keenon Ogden, a move that reflected a shift from firm associate work to a more advisory position.
Taylor is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has been a member of the North Carolina State Bar since 1990. His mechanical engineering background and USPTO registration position him to handle patent-related matters that require technical literacy alongside legal analysis. Over the years he has balanced IP work with general counseling for businesses that need practical solutions for protecting inventions and handling disputes.
Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in approach. He applies engineering experience to claim drafting and to evaluating the technical merits of patent positions. That grounding also shapes how he advises clients on risk and on the cost-benefit choices that often accompany intellectual property decisions. His career includes roles inside established firms and in counsel positions, giving him exposure to different practice models and client expectations.
Today Taylor practices at Carteret IP, where he continues to represent clients on patent and trademark matters and offers counsel tied to his engineering training. He remains an active member of the North Carolina bar and a registered practitioner before the USPTO. His current practice focuses on patent prosecution and intellectual property counseling for inventors and small to mid-size businesses.
