About Mark D. Chappell
Mark D. Chappell Jr. graduated from Wofford College in 2010 with a B.A. in economics and earned his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2015. He completed a traditional path from undergraduate study to law school. The years line up with a steady entrance into practice soon after graduation.
He joined Chappell, Smith & Arden, P.A. in 2015. That position marked the start of his legal career in Columbia. Over the years he has remained at the firm, handling matters that take him into court and into client meetings across the region.
Chappell is authorized to practice in South Carolina and before the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. He handles litigation in both state and federal forums and appears for clients in proceedings at multiple stages of a case. His courtroom work is grounded in the procedural rules and deadlines that govern trial practice in these jurisdictions.
His bar and association activity is part of his professional life. He is a current member of the Richland County Bar Association and belongs to the Young Lawyers Division of the American Association for Justice. While at the University of South Carolina School of Law he served as president of the school’s chapter of the South Carolina Association for Justice, an early leadership role that kept him involved in student and local bar events.
Colleagues describe him as practical and direct in handling files. He prepares cases for trial, manages discovery, and handles hearings and motions. He also spends time counseling clients on process and likely outcomes. The day-to-day work blends written advocacy and courtroom appearances, and he has built a practice that reflects that balance.
He maintains his practice at Chappell, Smith & Arden, P.A., serving clients from the firm’s offices in South Carolina. He is currently practicing in the South Carolina state courts and in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.
