Mark A. Broughton is a criminal defense attorney admitted to practice law in California in 1978. He holds and maintains an active license status. Mr. Broughton is the founder of Mark A. Broughton, PC, a law firm located at 2300 Tulare Street, Suite 215, Fresno, CA 93721. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.
Mr. Broughton earned his Juris Doctor degree from Western State University College of Law in San Diego. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, San Diego, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. He has been practicing law for over 40 years, specializing in criminal defense.
His practice areas encompass a wide range of criminal cases, including violent felonies, federal crimes, white-collar crimes, gang-related offenses, and murder charges. He has represented clients at all stages of the legal process, from initial case evaluation and discovery to trial proceedings in both state and federal courts. Mr. Broughton has conducted over 200 jury trials, achieving numerous not guilty verdicts, including in several murder cases.
Throughout his career, Mr. Broughton has been actively involved in the legal community. He served as the Chief Defense Attorney for a 17-attorney criminal defense law firm in Fresno, handling thousands of felony cases annually. He is certified by the State Bar of California as a Criminal Law Specialist and has been appointed to the special circumstances/death penalty panel of attorneys in Fresno County, regularly handling complex murder cases. Additionally, he has served on the Board of Trustees for the State Bar of California, appointed by the California Supreme Court.
Mr. Broughton is a member of the Fresno County Bar Association, where he has chaired the Criminal Law Section. He has also been involved with the Northern California Innocence Project, contributing to the exoneration of wrongfully convicted individuals. He has taught classes at local law schools, served as a Mock Trial Attorney Judge and team coach, and has been a Judge Pro-Tempore for the Fresno County Superior Court. He is fluent in Spanish, enabling him to effectively serve a diverse clientele.
