About Marilyn A.
Marilyn A. Miller studied at Clarke College and pursued graduate work at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, where she earned an M.S. She completed her legal education at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, receiving her J.D. in 1975. Those years set the foundation for a career concentrated on criminal defense and courtroom practice.
Her early public-sector work included time in the Office of the Cook County Public Defender. By 1983 she was serving as an assistant public defender, representing clients in a busy county system and gaining trial experience that would shape her later work. In 1998 she opened the Law Offices of Marilyn A. Miller, moving into private practice after years handling cases on behalf of indigent defendants.
Miller later served on federal panels. In 2006 she was appointed a Criminal Justice Act panel lawyer and joined the Federal Defender Panel for the U.S. District Court in Chicago. That role placed her on a roster of attorneys available to represent indigent defendants in federal court. She has handled matters in both trial and appellate settings while building a practice that crosses state and federal lines.
Her admissions reflect that reach. She is licensed in Illinois and North Carolina and has federal admissions that include the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, and the Seventh Circuit. Those credentials allow her to represent clients in a mix of state court proceedings and federal matters that require courtroom familiarity across jurisdictions.
Miller maintains memberships in professional organizations relevant to criminal defense practice. She is a member of the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Illinois State Bar Association. Those memberships keep her connected to developments in criminal law and to networks of trial practitioners.
Her practice has evolved from public defense work to a private practice that accepts serious criminal matters and federal cases. She continues to handle criminal defense representation in both state and federal courts through the Law Offices of Marilyn A. Miller. Her current practice focuses on criminal defense and federal court representation.
