About Marie R.

Marie R. Deveney built a foundation in the liberal arts and humanities before turning to law. She earned an A.B. from the University of Missouri–Kansas City and then completed an M.A. at the University of Michigan. She returned to Michigan for her legal training and received a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.

After law school she established herself in the Michigan legal community. She is an attorney at Dykema Gossett PLLC, where she continues a long-standing practice in matters tied to estates and trusts. Her career has balanced private practice and steady involvement in community and professional organizations.

Her practice centers on estate planning, probate and trust matters, along with planned giving. That orientation is reflected in the professional groups she has joined and the roles she has taken on. Colleagues know her for careful document drafting, attention to fiduciary duties and practical counsel for families and nonprofit institutions.

Deveney has held leadership positions in local and statewide bar groups. She served as chair of the Washtenaw County Bar Association’s Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Law Section from 1993 to 1995, and she is the current president of the Washtenaw County Estate Planning Council. She is a member of the Michigan State Bar Association Probate and Estate Planning Council and has been a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel since 2003.

Her work extends into nonprofit governance and civic projects. She has served on the Board of Advisors for the Leslie Science and Nature Center since 2007 and on the Planned Giving Committee for the Washtenaw Community College Foundation since 2004. She was a member of the Ann Arbor Public Schools Education Foundation board from 2009 to 2012, and she participated on the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History advisory board from 1998 to 2001. Earlier service includes a term on the Lawyers Club Board of Governors at the University of Michigan Law School from 1994 to 2004 and involvement with the Ann Arbor Art Center in the late 1990s.

Deveney has also contributed to legal education and practice resources. She has been on the Institute of Continuing Legal Education’s Publications Advisory Board for Estate Planning and Probate since 1995. That role has kept her engaged with changes in probate procedure, trust taxation and charitable giving structures.

She continues to practice at Dykema Gossett PLLC in Michigan, handling estate planning, probate, trust administration and planned giving matters for individuals and institutions.
