About Maria Victoria
Maria Victoria Stout combines a Naval engineering background with legal training. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1999, where she also studied Spanish. She later completed a Juris Doctor at the University of San Diego School of Law in 2008.
Her early career began at sea. Stout served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy. That experience exposed her to complex systems and operational environments. She moved from uniformed service into law, bringing that technical perspective to intellectual property work.
After law school she joined Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP as a patent lawyer in 2008. At the firm she has worked on patent matters that draw on her engineering education and military experience. Her practice has involved preparing and prosecuting patent applications and advising clients on patent strategy. She has represented inventors and companies in interactions with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in counseling on intellectual property issues.
Stout has maintained ties to academia. In 2009 she served as an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego School of Business Administration, teaching courses that intersect business and legal concerns. In 2014 she returned to the University of San Diego School of Law as an adjunct professor, bringing practical patent practice into the classroom. Students recall practical examples rooted in real-world practice rather than abstract theory.
Colleagues describe her as methodical and precise in drafting patent applications and in overseeing prosecution strategy. Her technical training in ocean engineering gives her a practical advantage when analyzing inventions in mechanical systems and related technologies. Years of work at a firm known for intellectual property work have kept her closely involved in patent law developments and USPTO practice.
Outside of litigation and prosecution, Stout provides counseling on patent portfolio management and helps clients evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of patent claims. She balances technical detail with legal analysis, and she regularly collaborates with inventors, engineers, and in-house counsel.
She is licensed to practice in California and is currently based at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP. Her current practice centers on patent prosecution, counseling, and portfolio development for technology clients.
