About Marc

Marc Gustafson earned his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, receiving a B.A. in 1997 with studies in education, political science and history. He continued his studies at Indiana University Bloomington and completed his J.D. in 2001. Those academic years shaped a lawyer who blends an interest in public policy and historical context with the everyday demands of legal practice.

After law school, Gustafson built a practice tied to the state where he is licensed and to the federal appellate courts that cover broad swaths of the eastern United States. He is admitted to practice in North Carolina and in the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and Eleventh Circuits. Those admissions allow him to take cases into federal appellate review as well as to represent clients in state-level matters in North Carolina.

His undergraduate majors — education, political science and history — inform his approach to legal problems. He tends to place facts in a larger institutional and historical frame. That perspective can be useful when cases touch on regulatory structures, administrative records or statutory interpretation. It also shapes how he prepares written arguments and presents complex sequences of events to judges.

Being admitted in two circuit courts means Gustafson is credentialed to appear on appeals that range across multiple states. Appellate practice requires a concise writing style and a comfort with layered procedural rules. Whether drafting briefs or preparing for oral argument, lawyers in that space must translate trial records into a narrow set of legal questions. Those are the professional tasks that Gustafson’s admissions permit him to undertake.

Colleagues and clients often notice his steady, methodical approach. He tends to favor careful record work and a clear, ordered presentation of issues. That method suits both the demands of trial preparation and the compression of appellate briefing. It also fits the mix of state and federal work that comes through North Carolina’s courts and the Fourth and Eleventh Circuits.

Gustafson’s education and court admissions frame his current practice. He works on matters that arise in North Carolina and on appeals before the Fourth and Eleventh Circuit courts. He currently focuses his practice on matters handled in North Carolina and federal appeals before the Fourth and Eleventh Circuits.
