About M. David
M. David Johnson is an attorney practicing in Colorado who has spent more than two decades in private practice and firm leadership. He earned a J.D. from the University of Denver in 1994 after completing a bachelor’s degree in philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1989. Those academic years shaped his approach to legal reasoning and client communication.
Johnson moved into firm management early in his career. In 2007 he became managing partner at Johnson Sauer Legal Group, where he balanced casework with the demands of running a growing practice. He took on a similar leadership role in 2014 as managing partner of Johnson Marquez PC. Each move expanded his responsibilities, from supervising associates to setting firm policies and shepherding complex matters through resolution.
In 2017 he became CEO of Modern Family Law. The title reflects a shift from solo practice management to executive oversight of a firm organized around family law services. As CEO he oversees operations, guides strategic decisions, and remains involved in client matters. His work has combined courtroom advocacy, negotiation, and the administrative tasks of keeping a multi-office firm running.
Johnson maintains an active membership in the State Bar of Colorado. That membership signals ongoing licensure in Colorado and participation in the professional community there. Over the years he has worked with colleagues across the state on family law and related issues, handling both contested hearings and negotiated settlements.
Colleagues describe Johnson as pragmatic at the table and methodical in the courtroom. He emphasizes clear explanations for clients who are often navigating emotionally difficult disputes. His background in philosophy informs his analytical approach to case theory while legal training underpins practical strategy.
He leads Modern Family Law from its Colorado base and continues to manage firm affairs alongside client representation. His current practice addresses family law matters, including divorce and child custody, through the firm Modern Family Law.
