About Laura

Laura Helmbrecht built a steady legal career after law school and has practiced in Ohio for more than a decade. She earned her J.D. from Capital University in 2005. Since then she has remained local to the Columbus legal community, handling matters that touch families and private disputes.

Helmbrecht's path is rooted in courtroom and collaborative settings. Early work in family law and dispute resolution gave her experience in negotiations, custody matters and settlement drafting. Over time she gravitated toward collaborative divorce approaches and other cooperative processes that aim to resolve conflict outside the trial calendar.

She joined the Columbus Bar Association in 2018 and maintains that membership. Through the bar she has stayed connected to the city's legal developments and to peers across practice areas. The same year she became active in the Central Ohio Academy of Collaborative Divorce Professionals. That association reflects an interest in alternatives to adversarial divorce and in methods intended to reduce cost and stress for families.

Colleagues describe Helmbrecht as methodical in preparing for negotiations and hearings. She combines attention to procedural detail with plainspoken communication for clients. Clients see her work in document preparation, parenting plans and the negotiation steps that lead to settlement agreements. She has experience in mediation sessions and in drafting agreements that reflect the negotiated outcomes.

Her office is in the German Village neighborhood of Columbus. From there she handles consultations, settlement conferences and filings for clients across Franklin County and nearby jurisdictions. She has kept her practice deliberately local, which allows for frequent in-person meetings and direct contact with local courts and court staff.

Outside of casework Helmbrecht attends continuing legal education events and participates in local professional networks. She has focused her professional associations on local bar activities and collaborative divorce practice groups. That involvement informs her day-to-day representation and keeps her current on changes in family law practice.

Helmbrecht continues to practice law in Ohio, maintaining a German Village office and handling family law matters, collaborative divorce cases and related dispute resolution work.
