About Laura C.
Laura C. Rivers pursued advanced legal training in tax and estate matters after completing her law degree. She earned her J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2009. She went on to complete an LL.M. in Taxation at Georgetown University Law Center in 2012, where she also obtained a Certificate in Estate Planning. Those credentials shaped the subjects that would occupy much of her professional work.
Early in her career she translated academic study into practical advising. Her training in federal tax law and estate planning informed client counseling on gift and estate tax issues, probate considerations and the tax implications of trust arrangements. She has worked with individual taxpayers, family offices and fiduciaries to address transfer strategies and tax compliance. Her approach has emphasized clear explanation of complex rules and careful document drafting.
Rivers’ work has required regular interaction with both transactional and administrative aspects of tax law. She has prepared estate plans, drafted trust instruments, and assisted in structuring wealth transfers to reflect clients’ objectives while considering tax consequences. She has also handled tax filings and related communications where reporting and disclosure are integral to completing transactions.
She balanced practice with continuing learning. The LL.M. coursework at Georgetown exposed her to advanced issues in partnership taxation, corporate tax, and estate tax policy. The certificate in estate planning reinforced training in drafting and planning techniques commonly used by estate practitioners. That combination of classroom and practice-based experience informs the practical advice she offers to clients today.
Colleagues and clients have relied on Rivers for matters that require both technical tax knowledge and careful client counseling. She is comfortable explaining the interaction of state probate processes and federal tax rules. She also assists clients in evaluating alternatives for transferring wealth, including lifetime gifts, trusts and beneficiary designations.
Rivers maintains a practice centered on taxation and estate planning. She continues to advise individuals, families and fiduciaries on tax- and estate-related matters in her current practice focus.
