About L. Patrick
L. Patrick Mulligan earned a B.A. in economics and English from Kings College in 1981 and completed his J.D. at the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1984. His academic background paired liberal arts and analytical study. It set the stage for a career centered on courtroom work.
He entered public service after law school, joining the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office in 1984 as a trial lawyer in the Criminal Division. Those early years placed him at the front line of criminal prosecutions, where he gained steady experience in trials and case preparation. In 1990 he moved into private practice as an associate at John H. Rion & Associates. Four years later he opened his own firm and became managing partner of L. Patrick Mulligan & Associates, LLC in 1994.
Mulligan has maintained professional memberships throughout his career. He joined the American Bar Association in 1984 and has belonged to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 1994. His peers have recognized his trial experience; he is board certified as a Criminal Law Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and has been listed among Super Lawyers’ Top 100 Trial Lawyers.
Those credentials reflect a practice built on courtroom work. Mulligan’s resume shows time spent on both sides of criminal cases. Prosecutorial experience early in his career informs how he approaches investigations, evidence and witness strategy. Years in private practice shifted his work toward defending people charged with crimes. He handles jury trials, hearings and pretrial litigation, emphasizing preparation and courtroom advocacy.
Colleagues and clients see a lawyer who returns repeatedly to tried procedures: careful case review, attention to procedural detail and a willingness to take cases to trial when necessary. He has tried cases at the county level and handled complex pretrial motions. His firm has operated under his management since the mid-1990s and presents itself as trial-oriented in criminal matters.
Mulligan continues to practice law in Ohio through L. Patrick Mulligan & Associates, LLC. He concentrates his practice on criminal defense in Ohio.
