About Kian
Kian Mottahedeh is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. He was admitted to the California State Bar in 2006. His license is currently in active status. Mr. Mottahedeh is the founder and managing partner of SM Law Group, APC, a law firm located in Encino, California. He has been practicing law for over 19 years, serving clients throughout Southern California.
Mr. Mottahedeh earned his Juris Doctor degree with an emphasis in Business Law from Whittier College School of Law, graduating in 2006. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at the University of California, Irvine, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Political Science in 2003. During his time at Whittier College, he held leadership positions in the Jewish Law Student Association and participated in Moot Court competitions. He also studied law at Universidad de Santander in Spain during a summer abroad program.
Mr. Mottahedeh concentrates his practice in the areas of bankruptcy law and personal injury. He has represented over 1,500 consumers in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy filings, successfully negotiating the removal of judgment liens and second mortgages that encumbered properties belonging to his clients. In personal injury law, he has secured significant settlements for clients, including a $1,000,000 settlement in a premises liability case in 2022 and a $905,000 settlement in an auto vs. truck accident case in 2021. His practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mottahedeh has been admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Central, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Districts of California. He has also appeared before the California Court of Appeal on multiple occasions. Prior to founding SM Law Group, he worked as a senior associate for six years at California’s largest consumer bankruptcy firm. He has been recognized as a Super Lawyer from 2022 to 2026, an honor awarded to a select number of accomplished attorneys in each state.
Mr. Mottahedeh is an active member of the State Bar of California and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is also a member of the San Fernando Valley Bar Association. He is fluent in English and Persian (Farsi), allowing him to serve the diverse communities of Southern California effectively. In his personal time, he enjoys fishing and the practice of martial arts.
