About Kevin William
There is a quiet steadiness to Kevin William Gaughen’s career. He built it on courtroom hours, steady study and a move into firm leadership soon after passing the bar.
Gaughen earned a B.A. in Government from Georgetown University in 1972 and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1976. He later obtained a Certificate in Estate and Trust Law from the Foundation for Continuing Education. Those credentials set the foundation for a practice that blends litigation experience and work on estate matters.
His early years were spent in public prosecution. In 1978 he worked as a prosecutor in the Cape and Islands district office. The following year he joined the Norfolk County district office as an assistant district lawyer. Those roles put him in court regularly and offered hands-on trial experience at the outset of his career.
By 1980 Gaughen had moved into private practice and became managing partner at Gaughen, Gaughen, Lane & Hernando. He steered the firm while continuing to appear in court. He has been a member of the Massachusetts State Bar since 1979 and holds admission to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and in Massachusetts courts. That combination of public and private work has defined much of his professional life.
Colleagues and clients have pointed to his steady courtroom presence and long view of legal problems. His prosecutorial background informs how he approaches contested matters. His certificate in estate and trust law signals work on wills, trusts and related probate issues, while his courtroom years reflect an ability to manage litigation when disputes escalate.
Over decades at Gaughen, Gaughen, Lane & Hernando he has overseen cases and mentored younger lawyers. The firm has been his primary office base and the platform from which he has handled a mix of matters in state and federal venues. He remains a member of the Massachusetts bar and continues to maintain his admission credentials.
Today he practices from Gaughen, Gaughen, Lane & Hernando, handling matters that draw on both his trial experience and his estate and trust training. He focuses his practice on estate and trust matters and litigation in Massachusetts.
