About Kevin

Kevin Sweeney built a foundation in accounting before turning to law. He earned a B.B.A. in Accounting from Loyola College in 2002 and received his J.D. from New York Law School in 2005. Those credentials set the stage for a career that has moved between military service, government litigation and private practice.

After law school he entered the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 2006. In uniform he handled a range of military legal matters. That work included courtroom responsibility, advising commanders and managing prosecutions and defenses under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

He left active duty for the Department of Justice in 2010, where he served as a trial lawyer in the Tax Division. At DOJ he litigated tax cases on behalf of the government, taking cases through investigation and trial. The position added federal trial and investigative experience to his background in military law.

In 2016 he joined Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Williams & Aughtry as a shareholder. In private practice he continued to build on his litigation record. His work has involved tax controversy and matters that intersect with criminal enforcement. He represents clients in disputes that range from audits and collection matters to cases where penalties and enforcement actions are at issue.

Sweeney maintains bar admissions across multiple jurisdictions. He is admitted in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York, and he is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. He participates in professional groups that reflect his practice areas, including the American Bar Association’s Section on Taxation, where he sits on the Civil and Criminal Tax Penalties Committee, and the ABA Section on Criminal Justice’s White-Collar Crime Committee.

Colleagues describe his approach as methodical and courtroom-ready. He draws on years of trial experience and an understanding of government processes to prepare cases for litigation. That background allows him to assess risk early and present options that can lead to negotiated resolutions or, when necessary, contested trials.

He balances litigation work with advising clients on compliance and penalty exposure. In his current role at Chamberlain Hrdlicka he handles tax controversy and white-collar defense in private practice.
