About Kevin Alan
Kevin Alan Keeling combines technical training and courtroom experience in a practice built around patents and intellectual property. He began his post-secondary studies in biology at Rice University in 1989, later earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology with a nuclear emphasis from Old Dominion University. He completed his legal education at Villanova University School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 2003.
Before law school, Keeling served in the United States Navy as an Electrician's Mate (Nuclear) First Class. That early work with naval nuclear systems informed the technical side of his later legal career. After law school he moved into patent practice and has worked at several firms and public-sector legal departments handling patent preparation, prosecution, and related litigation support.
Keeling’s early legal roles included positions at Caesar, Rivise, Bernestein, Cohen & Pokotilow and later at RatnerPrestia, where he practiced as a patent lawyer. He joined Howrey LLP and then Winston & Strawn as a senior associate, building experience in larger firm settings and in complex patent matters. In 2014 he served as Senior Assistant City Lawyer in the City of Houston Legal Department, handling municipal legal issues alongside intellectual property matters. In 2016 he established Keeling Law, LLC, and he now practices from the Law Offices of Kevin A. Keeling LLC.
He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and Texas and holds registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He has appeared or is admitted in a number of federal forums, including the United States District Courts in the Eastern, Southern, Western, and Northern Districts of Texas, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and federal appellate courts such as the Third, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits. These admissions allow him to handle prosecution before the USPTO and to represent clients in district and appellate matters when needed.
Keeling maintains memberships in professional organizations relevant to patent law. He has been a member of the Pennsylvania State Bar since 2003 and joined the State Bar of Texas in 2007. He is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Houston Intellectual Property Law Association. His technical background in engineering and biology complements his patent practice, particularly in technologies involving mechanical systems and nuclear-related inventions.
He prepares and prosecutes patent applications, advises clients on patent strategy, and represents clients before the USPTO and in federal courts, concentrating his current practice on patent prosecution and related intellectual property matters.
