About Kelly M.

Kelly M. Scanlan holds both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Juris Doctor from Indiana University–Purdue University at Indianapolis. She completed her nursing degree in 1997 and returned to IUPUI to earn her law degree in 2002. That combination of clinical training and legal education shapes how she approaches problems and explains why she pursued work that brings together practical and legal analysis.

After law school, Scanlan moved into private practice and into roles that blended professional leadership with case work. Her résumé includes a lengthy involvement in local bar organizations and a steady presence in the Indiana legal community. The timeline of positions and memberships shows a lawyer who has balanced practice duties with volunteer governance for professional groups.

Scanlan serves as Of Counsel at Baker & Gilchrist. In that role she advises on matters for the firm and draws on both her legal training and her nursing background. Her title signals a continuing professional relationship with the firm and a role that often involves mentorship and specialized advisory work rather than day-to-day firm management.

She has been active in the Indianapolis Bar Foundation and the Indianapolis Bar Association. She served on the Indianapolis Bar Foundation’s Board of Directors from 2008 to 2013, and she is listed as a past president of the foundation. Her work with these organizations has included governance responsibilities and public-facing programming tied to the local justice system. Scanlan is also a member of the Indiana State Bar and has belonged to the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association since 2011.

Colleagues note that Scanlan’s nursing background gives her a different vantage point when legal matters involve clinical facts or medical records. That perspective can make technical evidence easier to evaluate and can affect strategy in cases where health care issues are significant. She has used those skills in advising clients and in participating in professional groups that touch on access to legal services and civic initiatives.

Scanlan maintains an active role in the Indianapolis legal community while practicing as Of Counsel at Baker & Gilchrist. She continues to apply her combined legal and clinical experience to the matters she handles at the firm, and she remains involved in bar foundation work and association activities in Indiana.
