About Keith

Keith Schiszik trained as a lawyer at American University School of Law, earning his J.D. in 1971. He completed his legal education during a period of rapid change in family law. Those early years shaped his interest in dispute resolution and client-focused practice.

He began working in private practice in 1977. Over the decades he developed a body of work centered on family law and related processes. He is licensed in Maryland and has maintained an active role in the local legal community. His long tenure in practice is paired with a steady involvement in court-connected programs.

Schiszik holds several court certifications that reflect a preference for nonadversarial processes. He is certified in mediation, in parenting coordination, as a child’s lawyer, and in collaborative practice through the Administrative Office of the Courts. Those credentials allow him to handle cases that require neutral facilitation, child advocacy, and structured negotiation outside the courtroom.

His association work has been prominent. He serves in the American Bar Association and participates in the Maryland chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. Locally, he has chaired the Frederick County Family Law Committee. He also formerly chaired the Maryland State Bar Family Law Section and currently chairs the Legislative Commission on Family Law’s Subcommittee on Legislation. Those roles have kept him close to rule changes and statutory updates affecting families and courts.

Colleagues describe him as methodical and steady in the courtroom and during settlement discussions. He has shifted much of his practice toward processes that reduce conflict. That transition reflects both his certifications and his work on committees that study family law policy. He has experience representing clients at various stages of divorce, custody, and post-judgment matters, and he regularly serves in roles meant to protect children’s interests in contested cases.

He also spends time mentoring other lawyers and contributing to local legal education programs. His committee work places him in frequent contact with legislators, judges, and family law practitioners who shape Maryland practice. He uses those connections to track legislative developments and court procedures that affect daily practice.

Schiszik practices out of Offit Kurman and continues to handle family law matters and alternative dispute resolution cases. He currently practices family law and alternative dispute resolution at Offit Kurman.
