Mr. Rutman earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1989. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at Brandeis University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986. During his time at the University of San Diego, he was actively involved in various legal organizations and gained practical experience through internships and clerkships.
Mr. Rutman concentrates his practice in the areas of criminal defense, business litigation, and police misconduct lawsuits. He represents individuals and businesses in matters involving drug crimes, domestic violence, weapons charges, theft, and civil rights violations. His practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Throughout his career, Mr. Rutman has handled cases in the Superior Court of California for the County of San Diego, the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He has also appeared before the California Court of Appeal on multiple occasions. Prior to founding his own firm, he worked as an associate at a mid-size litigation firm in San Diego for five years.
Mr. Rutman is an active member of the San Diego County Bar Association, the State Bar of California, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice. He is also a contributing editor and author for "San Diego Lawyer Magazine." Additionally, he is a master in the William B. Enright Inns of Court and participates in the San Diego County Bar Association's Children at Risk project. Mr. Rutman is fluent in Spanish, allowing him to serve the diverse communities of San Diego effectively.
