About Katie
Katie Elwart built her legal foundation in Georgia. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences Education from the University of Georgia in 1998 and completed her Juris Doctor at Georgia State University College of Law in 2001. Those years set the course for a career grounded in courtroom work and client advocacy.
She began her career in public defense. In 2001 she joined the Office of the Public Defender for the Atlanta Judicial Circuit as a staff lawyer. Over the next eight years she handled a steady caseload and courtroom calendar. In 2009 she advanced to the role of senior trial lawyer, a position that placed her at the center of major trial preparations and jury work for the office.
After nearly two decades serving public clients, she shifted to private practice. In 2016 she became an owner and partner at Elwart & Hobbs LLC. Four years later she opened the Law Office of Kathryn Elwart. Her practice now operates under the name Kathryn Elwart LLC. That sequence reflects a move from institutional defender work to managing a small law practice.
Her professional affiliations mirror that path. She is active in the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and holds memberships in the Atlanta Bar Association, the Cobb County Bar Association, and the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers. Those groups are part of a wider engagement with the legal community in Georgia and reflect ongoing connections to trial colleagues and local bar activities.
Throughout her career she has remained engaged in adversarial practice and courtroom procedures. The early years in the public defender’s office sharpened her trial work and daily courtroom routines. In private practice she applies that experience to representing clients across Georgia. She currently handles criminal defense matters through Kathryn Elwart LLC.
